Cute little pet dogs.
One negative externality that can be found in our daily life will be the existence of pet dogs. A search on the internet shows that around 10% of the family in Singapore owns a dog. This would mean that there will be quite a big amount of pet dogs in Singapore. Now let’s look at how it can turn into an externality.
Dogs are common animal kept by human as pet. We pamper them and treat them as if they are humans, feeding them with top grade dog food that cost over a few hundred dollars every month. After eating, owners will bring their dog for a walk to exercise around the neighbourhood. This is when the dogs suddenly have a stomach ache and start to poo all over the pave way and on the grass. If we are lucky, the dog owners would have actually picks up the waste and throw it away. However, Singaporeans are hardly considerate towards others. Many of time dog’s waste are left to decompose and rot on the streets. Next come along an innocent passerby who accidentally steps on the shit. This will result in a negative externality for the innocent person. He did not have fun playing with the dog or what so ever but have to clean up his shoe when he reaches home. Furthermore, he may have to endure the awful stench as he makes his way home.
Another externality existing with the presence of pet dogs will be their barking early in the morning. When the poor neighbour of the owner of the dog is still sleeping, he/she would actually be awoken by the loud and irritating barking of the pet dog. This result in a negative externality for the neighbour as he/she would result in a lack of sleep. However, it might also be a positive externality for the neighbour if he/she wants to save money on getting an alarm clock. =D
